MAYFIELD DUPLICATE BRIDGE CLUB

Secretary’s Report 2010-2011

This has been my first year as your Secretary. I have enjoyed the role very much and hope that you will re-elect me for a further term. I see more clearly now the amount of work that goes on behind the scenes and can express my best wishes to retiring Committee Members who deserve a rest!

During the course of the year we have held four Committee Meetings, which have been well attended, there has been a general consensus on all issues and all actions have been resolved quickly.

The year has passed quite smoothly with few problems. Sometimes Friday attendance has been disappointing but we have made some efforts to correct this, which seems to have borne fruit.

I have endeavoured to maintain the database of Members’ addresses and emails up to date. Please continue to advise me of any changes. Communications with Members by email has continued to increase to a figure of approximately 80 of a membership of 100.

I have received a number of communications from the Surrey County Bridge Association (SCBA) and the English Bridge Union (EBU) during the period. There have been no particular problems and I have forwarded general notices to members where this has seemed appropriate. We were consulted over the way Clubs interact with SCBA and are thus represented to the EBU. We provided a comprehensive response and may have contributed to the minor changes that will eventually be implemented. Generally, Club Members show limited interest in SCBA and EBU affairs and SCBA events continue to be poorly attended.

David Dick successfully attended a Tournament Director Course with the EBU (costs shared with the Dell Bridge Club) and we have enrolled Ann Madden and Alan Bailey for the same course in June of this year.

We tried our best to keep Members advised of any cancellations due to bad weather during the winter. A few Members felt that we were a little conservative in our actions but St. John’s car park was very icy for long periods and we took the view that Member safety was paramount. It is unfortunate that we could not hold the Christmas party but hopefully the AGM will be a Fun Affair.
