CHAIRMAN’S REPORT

P2P

Much of the Committee’s time this year has been spent preparing for the EBU’s new strategy.  Thank you for sending back the information forms – we now have approximately 99% of them filled in.  Malcolm has done sterling work in relaying the data to the EBU and we now await 1 April to see whether the new system works.

I would recommend that you keep a tally of the number of times you play if it is likely to exceed 150 times per annum.  The 29p levied for each playing session is capped at 150 sessions.  After which you continue to pay but will be entitled to a rebate at the end of March each year.  If the rebate is below £5 it will be kept in your name and can be used for EBU events etc.  Otherwise you will receive a cheque from the EBU for the overpayment.

For any problems about the P2P either speak to a Committee member or go to the EBU website

Master Points

From 1 April there will be no more paper master points issued - they will be registered under your name at the EBU.  Although the present ones have a life span of 3 years, I would recommend that you submit them as soon as possible.

Best Behaviour at Bridge

The EBU have produced a document for behaviour at the bridge table and a copy of this is on the notice board and can be found on the EBU website.  We would like to make sure that this document is adhered to at the Mayfield for our own benefit and to help make visitors feel welcome at the club.

Norman Cup

In view of the diminishing numbers entering for this event, it has been decided to keep it at a 2 night event at which members can play on either or both occasions.  Only those playing both nights will be entitled to win the trophy which will be awarded on the aggregate score for both sessions.

EBU/Surrey Simultaneous Pairs

It has been decided to hold the Surrey Simultaneous Pairs on a Friday only.  This is because the Tuesday one in September follows hard on the heels of the EBU Simultaneous Pairs, which we will continue to hold, and the February one is in the midst of several of our competitions.

Dancers

I take this opportunity to repeat that on a Tuesday, we should not enter the hall until 7.20pm following a complaint by a father that he objected to our members going in when the dancers were still in their leotards.  After at least 10 years of doing this, it did seem a little OTT but we came to this compromise with which Deidre had no problem and to which he reluctantly agreed.  Fridays is slightly different as the dancers do not finish until 7.30pm but this does not present such a problem for us in getting the room ready etc.

2011

Providing that I am re-elected as Chairman, this will be my last year on the Committee.  Rosemary retired this year and, although my 3 years as Chairman are up, I felt that I should continue for another year to avoid 2 key jobs having to be filled and also with the onset of P2P in which Rosemary, Malcolm and myself have been heavily involved.

The Committee

There has been much to challenge the Committee this year and I would like to thank them all for their support and the hard work they have put in.  Roy is retiring this year and it has been appreciated that, even though suffering with ill-health, he has still managed to attend meetings and organise the printing of the fixture card.  We wish him improved health in the future.

Rosemary

I cannot end my report without thanking Rosemary for the enormous amount of work she has done for the Club over the past 10 years and saying what an excellent Secretary she has been for the past 5 years.  It has been a great pleasure working with her.  She will be much missed but happily she has agreed to continue to help with the website, scoring and hand recording.  Thank you so much Rosemary.
